Steel gold pans have to be one of coolest items a prospector can acquire, once you burn them the oil off you're left with a unique patina that will age well.
Whilst small the steel pan will last for years and can take a beating, its not uncommon for the prospector to break a rock with a hammer inside the steel pan you certainly can't do that with a plastic pan.
