If we break these down to two main types you have the shoveled edge and the standard plow disc style. I prefer the shovel edge but many swear by the plow disc.

Pick heads are made of 5mm, 600 bisalloy steel (same material as used on
mining conveyor buckets & excavators for maximum strength & durability)
Handles are spotted gum hardwood and we have one small pick which is all steel.
